Sticky trap pest management entails catching and immobilizing bugs with a glue-based trap. These traps are usually made of cardboard with a layer of sticky adhesive on top. Alternatively, the card can be folded into a tent form or laid flat. The tent cover keeps dust and other debris off the sticky surface. Some sticky traps have a smell to attract specific bugs.
Sticky traps are typically used to minimize aphid, whitefly, and thrips populations in the greenhouse or at home. These traps can be used to monitor insect populations to see if another pest control technique is working or to pinpoint the source of your pest problems.
Most pests can be caught and monitored using yellow sticky traps. (This includes whiteflies, fungus gnats, shore flies, thrips, winged aphids, leaf miners, scales, and a variety of other insects.) However, be aware that they may collect parasitic wasps, midges, and beetles accidently. Use with caution. Reduce the duration of the hang if necessary; just be consistent.
Blue traps are solely for thrips, which is useful if you want to monitor for thrips while avoiding accidental capture of parasitoids such as Aphidius spp. and other at-risk biocontrol's. Hot pink is another good thrips coloring, however it is not a commercially available trap color.
