- Temperature below 15℃ will affect the growth of the plant as well as fruit quality.
- A temperature ranging from 13-21℃ is ideal for Brinjal.
- Low humidity and high temperature can cause heavy flower drop and poor fruit set.
Crop Water Requirement
- Water requirement- Equivalent to 600-1000 mm of rainfall.
- It cannot withstand excessive rainfall especially during flowering and fruit set.
- Excessive rainfall brings defoliation, wilting and rotting of the plant.
Favourable Soil

Type
- Sandy loam soil and heavy clay soil with good water holding capacity.
- Well drained and fertile soil is preferred for the crop.
pH

- Sow the seeds in line at 5 cm apart and cover with soil.
- Water the nursery beds daily twice till germination and once after germination.
- Ten days before transplanting, reduce the quantity of water application to the nursery beds to harden the seedlings.
- After 3 days of seed germination drench the seedbed with Ridomil @ 20 gms. in 10 lit of water, to protect the seedlings from damping-off disease. Spray 19:19:19 @ 5 gm + Thiamethoxam @ 0.25 gm per lit water at 25 days after sowing.
Method 2
- Fill the pro trays with Cocopeat @ 1.2 kg Cocopeat per tray.
- Sow the treated seeds in protrays @ 1 seed per cell.
- Cover the seed with cocopeat and keep the trays one above the other and cover with a polythene sheet till germination starts (5 Days).
- After 6 days, place the pro trays with germinated seeds individually on the raised beds inside a shade net.
Nursery Duration
- 30-35 days
- The seedlings are ready for transplanting when they attain a height of 15 cm with 2-3 true leaves.
