Bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) is a popular vegetable crop grown for its immature tuberculate fruits with a distinct bitter flavor. Fruits are high in vitamins and minerals, containing 88 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. After stuffing and frying, fruits are used, and delicious preparations are made. During market gluts, fruits are sliced, partially boiled with salt, dried in direct sunlight, and stored for months.
It is a warm-season crop that is primarily grown in subtropical and hot-arid climates. They are susceptible to light frost and provide some protection if grown during the winter months. A temperature range of 24°–27°C is considered ideal for vine growth.
Temperatures above 18 °C are ideal for seed germination. High humidity during vegetative growth makes the crop susceptible to a variety of fungal diseases.
