✅ Sugarcane Early Shoot Borer Identification:
The adult moth is straw-colored and has a wing span of around 1.5 inches. The palpi on the lower wings are pointed forward and are grayish-white. The newly hatched caterpillars are greyish in color with a black head and a translucent body covered with patches and hairs. These dots eventually evolve into spines. The fully developed caterpillar is 1.25 inches long.
✅ Sugarcane Early Shoot Borer Life Cycle:
🟠 The presence of this pest and the characteristics of its life history vary depending on climate and sugarcane planting period. It may appear in February, although it is most common in Indian circumstances between March and May.
🟠 The female lays between 300 and 400 eggs. The eggs are placed in groups of 10-30 eggs on the underside of the leaves towards the midrib. The eggs have a scale-like appearance and are creamy-white in color. The eggs hatch in approximately a week, and the larvae feed on the leaf epidermal before boring into the stem from near the base with the help of their cutting and biting mouth parts.
🟠 The larvae are a dull white coloration with brownish-red longitudinal lines on the back. A fully grown larva is around 2.5 cm long. The larvae are distinguished by the fact that they bore in and bore out multiple times, either in the same stalk or in adjoining stalks.
🟠 After about three weeks, the larvae pupate in the tube within the sugarcane stalk where they had been feeding previously. After a little more than a week, the moth emerges from the exit hole produced by the larva prior to pupation. In a year, four to five generations are repeated. The larvae hibernate during the winter months.
✅ Sugarcane crop damage -
🟠 This pest is primarily destructive to young plants before internode development. Caterpillars cause the harm by boring into the stem and feeding on the fragile tissues. While feeding, the caterpillars migrate upward as well as downward and may reach the roots, which eventually dry and create a 'dead heart'.
🟠 The dead heart is easily extracted. It has an unpleasant scent. Internode infestation causes matured cane to become hard and devoid of juice, making milling difficult. Tunnels are also developed within the shoot, reducing both the quality and quantity of the juice. This bug may cause up to 50% damage.

1. Cut open this pack and slide the lure piece outside. Do not use your bare hands to handle the lure.
2. Slide this bait into the hole provided in the delta trap to secure it in place.
3. Replace the lure when the recommended time has passed.
4. Hands should be thoroughly washed before and after handling the trap and lure.
5. The used lure should be disposed of by burning it or burying it underground.
