Lucerne, also known as "Alfalfa" or "Rijka" in northern India and "Methi Ghas" in Maharashtra, is a highly nutritious fodder rich in protein, often called the "Queen of Fodder Crops." This perennial plant provides fodder for 3-4 years from the same planting. Besides protein, it is also a good source of minerals and calcium. Lucerne is a tasty green fodder containing 16-25% crude protein and 20-30% fiber. It’s a resilient legume crop that can easily be made into silage or hay. Goats, sheep, cows, buffaloes, horses as well as ducks, chickens are very fond of food. Grown mainly during winter, it’s widely cultivated in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan.
